Its just a bag Ben, stop posting so much crap about a damned bag. Seriously, what is this a department store?
And then theres the reaction my wife gave me… ‘YOU SPENT WHAT ON A BAG’… Talk about role reversals, although to be fair this is very characteristic of our marriage, I have so about triple the amount of shoes that she does, but in my defence, they all look fabulous!
So, the peak design messenger bag 13
- You gotta get used to it, it took me a good few weeks to really get my layout down, and also to adjust the sort of stuff I travel with, the 13 is not as big as I thought it would be so I have slimmed down some of the bulkier items I travel with, even down to buying a smaller sunglasses and glasses case.
- Your going to take a lot more photos and videos when you rock this beast. My camera is now with me everywhere I go, and I love it.
- They bang on about the strap being an ‘anti tangle’ strap, but I think thats a load of crap, mine is constantly needing straightening, its a small thing but a bit of false advertising
- This thing is not cheap! especially when you add on all the cool extras, but with the price tag comes build quality, customer service, functionality and some super handy features such as the red and green pockets, smart peak design. very smart.
Ive been mincing around Europe and the USA with National Geographic for the past few months, its been a project which has required a lot of city slicking, this means lots of getting in and out of cabs, lots of quick trips, journeys on public transport and some incognito filming in Paris, Barcelona, New York, and this bag has stormed it. Usually I take my F stop Shakua on those sorts of days, and by the end of it I feel in need of multiple steaks and a good massage, but by learning how to slim down my gear to just a DSLR setup I have been able to get everything I need for a days B roll shooting around these cities into this bag, and one small osprey back pack. Not just that but its discreet, nobody looks at me and thinks I'm packing ten grands worth of camera gear, I'm just another tourist (which does annoy me somewhat…). The laptop compartment is curiously located, its right at the back and very snug with my 13 inch mac book air, I've got a mac book pro 13 inch on order and I'm interested to see how it handles that, but It does feel like a bit of a risk having the laptop in this prime ‘bumper’ area, especially when I'm regularly jumping up onto things and getting myself into trouble, I'm always worried that I'm going to smash the crap out of the thing…time will tell on this one.
The front pocket isn't as big as i would like it to be, if you, like me travel with a decent stack of hard-drives that are over the 1tb mark then it is a bit of a stretch to get them all into this bag, especially if you want to keep a camera handy. The passport pouch is perfectly located, but theres no real room for documents.
The weather resistant fabric is a big plus, and something I will be putting to the test in my video review, cant comment on this element currently.
over all its not as ‘roomy’ as I had expected, but I guess thats the compromise you make when you carry around a camera in the bag as well, ultimately it cant be a bag for everything and its clearly been designed as a bag which is an excellent camera carrier but can also get your general junk in it as well, which ultimately works for me.
I agonised over which bag to buy, my concern with this one was that it was a bit ‘gimmicky’, but every feature has so far proved useful, the key latch is ace, and the ability to just unzip the top hatch and have full access is a killer feature, and one I'm using on a daily basis. Nice touch bottom on this beast as well, I do love a tough bottom.
